Every child has individual learning needs, and many have difficulties with learning at some stage in their development. Teachers use differentiated materials and flexible teaching strategies where appropriate to take account of this, and the school fosters a supportive climate, where the contribution of all pupils is equally valued.
In a relatively small school such as Arran High, some class sizes are small, and teachers can get to know their pupils well and provide sympathetic teaching for pupils who are experiencing difficulties. Learning Support teachers within the school provide additional support for all pupils, and particularly those with special needs, who may require extra individual help or reinforcement. This usually takes place by means of co-operative teaching, with the Learning Support teacher working together with the subject teacher within the classroom, so that all pupils are integrated into the work of the class.
The use of additional resources, such as computers for word processing and help with spelling, scribing and reading materials available on cassette, are other ways of offering pupils support for learning within the school context.
Some senior pupils will contribute to the learning in junior classes as part of the Peer Support scheme.
Parents are encouraged to support their children’s learning by taking an interest in school work and homework assignments, by reading with younger pupils and those who have reading difficulties, and by alerting the school if any problems or difficulties arise. Support staff are available for consultation at Parents’ Evenings and by arrangement at other times, and further advice and support is available through the staff of Psychological Services and the Careers Service, who visit the school regularly.
There are no special schools, units or classes on the Isle of Arran. Arran High, together with its seven primaries, caters for the needs of all pupils including some who might otherwise attend special schools, units or classes. The Arran Support Service who provide expert advice and assistance supports all of the island schools. A number of pupils at Arran High School have a Record of Needs.
